Scary Mommy’s Guide to Surviving the Holidays Holiday Tips

If you’re an internet-using mama, you must know of Jill Smokler, a.k.a Scary Mommy. Author of two books, the NY Times best-seller Confessions of a Scary Mommy and Motherhood Comes Naturally (and Other Vicious Lies), Jill has created a community of moms online, averaging over 30 million views per month, where one can finally feel at home. I especially love her mommy confessional, where thanks to the anonymity of the internet, moms can share their deepest secrets.
As a new mom, I read Jill’s first book in tiny bursts on the toilet. *Because that’s the only time I could find to read.) It was the first time I read something about motherhood that didn’t make me feel, well… shitty. Jill said the things I’d wish I could. She was a total inspiration for me to start writing my web series, Slummy Mummy.
Cut to a few months later. I was feeling particularly crappy about the choices I had made as I freelance kind of-sort of working mom, and dashed off a short blog about it. On a whim, I emailed it to Jill, never expecting to hear back. I was thrilled when it became a guest post on ScaryMommy.com and was shared on Facebook almost 14,000 times.
And then it got even more surreal… my mama comedy writing idol asked me to contribute to her new book, Scary Mommy’s Guide to Surviving the Holidays. Out on November 17th, this e-book from Simon and Schuster is chock-full of irreverent essays about holiday tips by the most hilarious moms on the internet. (How did I get lumped in with these ladies? Don’t tell them I’m an imposter!) My piece is called “Faking it in the Kitchen” and outlines just how you can fool your extended family into thinking you have it all together this holiday season.
I’m honored to be included in this list of writers:
Kim Bongiorno • Christine Burke • Abby Byrd • Andrea Condodemetraky • Sarah Cottrell • Janie Emaus • Victoria Fedden • Nancy Friedman • Anna Gebert • Deborah Goldstein • Alice Gomstyn • Sharon Green • Jessica Griffin • Maria Guido • Toni Hammer • Natalie Hoage • Harmony Hobbs • Amy Hunter • Julie Lay • Kathryn Leehane • Jennifer Lizza • Lola Lolita • Alessandra Macaluso • Leslie Marinelli • Hannah Mayer • Jessica Mayer • Amanda Mushro • Jennifer Weedon Palazzo • Tarja Parssinen • Robyn Passante • Crystal Ponti • Lily Read • Jennifer Scharf • Alisa Schindler • Tammy Scott • Jennifer Simon • Allison Slater Tate • Jill Smokler • Rita Templeton • Vicky Willenberg • Joelle Wisler • Megan Zander.
And if holiday tips from snarky moms isn’t reason enough to purchase, a portion of the proceeds go to The Thanksgiving Project, a charity that helps families in need celebrate Thanksgiving. And that’s the most important piece in all of this. Because while some of us (moi?) are gorging ourselves on turkey and red wine, there are families in our own backyards that need help. Read all about how you can help here.
