You’re going to want to sit down for this. In case you’ve been living under a rock, (or just preoccupied with raising kids and doing ALL the things!), skinny jeans are out and mom jeans are IN for 2023. To be honest, I think they’ve been “in” for a while but we haven’t gotten around to noticing. (Again, too busy raising kids.)
When we were young, the term “mom jeans” meant totally uncool, shapeless, high-waisted, loose or boot cut ankles, and (gasp!) maybe even stone-washing. Remember the hilarious Saturday Night Live Mom Jeans sketch?
There are some theories as to why mom jeans are making a 2023 comeback. My favorite is that young women are becoming less concerned about whether they look thin or not. They are comfortable with their bodies and want to feel comfortable in their jeans.

As someone born on the cusp of Gen X and Millenial, I am having trouble with this mom jean development. I feel skinniest in skinny jeans! Even when I’m above my ideal weight, the look of skinny jeans makes me feel curvy and attractive. Mom jeans make me feel like I’m wearing a burlap sack.
There are some upsides to the mom jeans trend of 2023, though. Do you know how many times my husband and kids have pointed out that my butt crack shows when I squat down in my low-rise mom jeans? No one needs to see that.
And once I became a mom, muffin-top made its appearance. My lower abdomen and hips will never shrink back to the ideal skinny-jean size. With mom jeans, the belly is held in. It’s kind of like denim Spanx. (If you’ve seen our web series, Slummy Mummy, you’ll recall I’m a big user of the Spanx.) It will take some getting used to, but the tummy covering magic of high-waisted mom jeans, might just win me over.
When you inject the idea of motherhood into something, well, to put it bluntly, it loses its sex appeal. To “mom dance,” for example, is to dance embarrassingly. Fairly or not, dresses, underwear, and heels that could be described as “matronly” are, at least according to fashion authorities, to be avoided. As are mom haircuts.
Mom jeans, however, are an exception—or at least, they are now.

Did you know that brands like Levis, H&M, Topshop, Zara, Reformation, and Madewell all sell a line of jeans with high waists and straight legs and market them specifically as mom jeans?
Here are the mom jeans YOU NEED for 2023!
My first pair of mom jeans in 2023… fleece-lined.
This winter was COLD. Long underwear under my regular jeans wasn’t doing it. So I purchased these on Amazon. My tummy feels so “held” and some young girl on the street told me they were “lit.”
Levi’s actually proudly calls these “mom jeans!”
