From the DADCave: Staying Connected While Traveling | Traveling Parent
Our very own Dad-in-residence, Sib, talks about traveling while being a working parent and how he stays connected.
Pack a Book and Stay Connected
When my kids were younger and I traveled for business, I struggled to stay connected with them when I was on the road. Sure, they would be excited to hear my voice. But, as I asked questions about their day—who they played with or sat with at lunch—I would inevitably run dry of questions. I felt like even though I was asking all the right stuff, I wasn’t getting that quality time. We even started video chatting using Skype and Facetime and that helped to a degree. But, part of that connection is built by getting time together and we didn’t get it when I traveled!
When I was home, I read to them nightly, sometimes for 20-30 minutes. The magic of that time was lacking when work took me on the road. Then, one trip we did something on a whim. I packed a copy of a favorite book and I read to them via video chat. As if we had been doing it the entirety of their childhood it felt very natural. There I was in a comfy hotel chair, feet propped up on the bed, computer sitting on the AC unit, with Dr. Suess in my hands. My guys loved it! So, as we graduated to chapter books, I continued to read via video chat when I was on the road.
That’s one of my favorite tips to share with traveling parents! Don’t let the distance get in the way of your nightly story time. Pack a book. Read to your kids via video chat and stay connected.
